Macy’s Credit Card Review Summary

The Macy’s Credit Card is a good card that’s worth applying for if you regularly shop at Macy’s. Macy’s Credit Card users enjoy a $0 annual fee and rewards of up to 5 points / $1 on Macy’s purchases, plus a 20% discount on your first purchase.

It’s easier to get a Macy’s card than you might think, too. The Macy’s Credit Card on the American Express network requires good credit or better for approval, but if you don’t qualify for that version, you will be automatically considered for the Macy's Store Card, which requires a minimum of fair credit. The two cards are nearly identical, except that the Macy’s Amex can be used wherever American Express is accepted while the store card only works for Macy’s purchases.

This review will focus on the Amex version, the Macy’s Credit Card. But you can also see how it compares to the store card in case you wind up getting approved for that instead.

Macy’s Credit Card Highlights

Up To $100 Off Your First Purchase

You will receive a 20% discount on purchases at a Macy’s store or on Macys.com for two days after account approval, with the savings being applied to your account as a statement credit. Note, however, that the discount cannot exceed $100. That means only purchases of $500 or less will benefit from the discount. What’s more, you’re only eligible to receive this rebate if you’re immediately approved for an account upon applying. If “further processing” is required, you’re out of luck.

Up To 5 Points Per $1 Spent

After the first-purchase discount, 2 to 5 points per $1 spent at Macy’s, depending on your annual spend. Platinum members – people who spend $1,200+ at Macy’s per year – get 5 points per $1. Gold members – those who spend $500+ per year – get 3 points per $1. Everyone else gets 1 point per $1.

You will also earn 3 points per $1 spent at restaurants, 2 points per $1 at gas stations and supermarkets and 1 point per $1 everywhere else.

Points are worth $0.01 each, but you can only redeem for Macy’s merchandise. Once you accumulate 1,000 points, a $10 reward will be issued.

Access To Special Promotions

You will receive three to 12 Star Passes per year, depending on how much you spend. A single purchase qualifies you for three, while spending at least $500 gets you six and crossing the $1,200 mark scores you 12. A Star Pass is basically a discount code redeemable for certain Macy’s purchases, but you can receive them only if you’re signed up to receive Macy’s marketing material and if your account is in good standing.

Additional benefits, include exclusive travel deals, savings on dining and shopping, and a birthday gift. Plus, you get to choose a day for 25% off, and if you’re a Gold or Platinum member, you get free standard shipping on Macy’s purchases.

No Annual Fee

The Macy’s Credit Card does not charge an annual fee. The same can be said for most retailer-affiliated credit cards, but not for the average credit card overall. The average annual fee among new credit card offers is currently $21.

Not having to worry about an annual fee allows you to keep your account open for longer without concerns over getting your money’s worth. It also makes it easier to justify adding the Macy’s Credit Card if you have other credit card accounts open already.

Macy’s Credit Card Lowlights

Very High Regular APR

The Macy’s Credit Card has a regular APR of 26.74% (V). For context, the average APR for “good credit” credit cards is 19.73%, and the store-card average is 25.27%, according to WalletHub’s latest Credit Card Landscape Report.

You should therefore strive to always pay your Macy’s Credit Card bill in full. That shouldn’t be too big of a sacrifice, though, considering that high-end clothing and accessories purchases are not debt-worthy necessities.

No 0% Purchase Financing

Many credit cards, including retailer-affiliated plastic, offer reduced introductory financing rates on new purchases and/or balance transfers. The Macy’s Credit Card does not. In fact, balance transfers aren’t allowed at all.

This isn’t the worst thing in the world, considering the types of goods that Macy’s sells (primarily clothing and accessories) and the fact that many retailer financing deals come with a sneaky feature known as “deferred interest,”. But the lack of low introductory interest rates is certainly not a positive feature, either.

Other Things To Consider About The Macy’s Credit Card

3% Foreign Transaction Fee

American Express’ relatively limited worldwide acceptance and the largely domestic presence of Macy’s are far from a dream combination for international travelers, so this card’s 3% foreign transaction fee isn’t likely to affect most users. . But if you do plan to travel abroad or shop online through international merchants, make sure to use a credit card with no foreign fee.

Good or excellent credit required

You'll need good or excellent credit to get approved for the Macy’s Credit Card. You can check your latest credit score for free on WalletHub to gauge your odds of getting this version of the offer.

What If You’re Declined For The Macy’s Credit Card?

If you don’t get approved for the Macy’s Credit Card, you will be considered for the Macy’s Store Card. The Macy’s Store Card is easier to get, requiring just fair credit, and it offers nearly all the same perks as the Amex version. The biggest difference aside from the minimum credit score requirement is that you can only use the Macy’s Store Card at Macy’s and macys.com.

You can request a Macy's Credit Card credit limit increase online, through the Department Stores National Bank mobile app, or by calling customer service at 1-888-257-6757. To raise your chances of being approved for a higher credit limit, pay your bill on time for at least six straight months, reduce your outstanding debt, and update the income Department Stores National Bank has on file. Department Stores National Bank will be more likely to increase your credit limit if the revised income clearly shows that you can afford a higher limit.

How To Get a Macy's Credit Card Credit Limit Increase Online

  1. Log in to your online account or the Department Stores National Bank mobile app.
  2. Choose the Macy's Credit Card from the list of account options (if you have more than one Department Stores National Bank card).
  3. Click “Credit Summary,” and then “Request a Credit Limit Increase.”
  4. Enter your annual income, residential status and monthly mortgage or rent payment.
  5. Confirm the information entered and click “Submit” to complete the request.

You should receive a decision in just a few seconds. If you're approved for a Macy's Credit Card credit limit increase, the new limit is effective immediately.

Impact of a Macy's Credit Card Credit Limit Increase on Your Credit Score

When you request a Macy's Credit Card credit limit increase, Department Stores National Bank will conduct a soft pull of your credit report, which does not affect your credit score. However, some Macy's Credit Card credit limit increase requests may involve a hard pull, which will cause a short-term dip in your credit score. Department Stores National Bank cannot do a hard pull without your permission.

Alternatively, you could be eligible for a Macy's Credit Card credit limit increase without even requesting one. The Macy's Credit Card may offer an automatic credit limit increase if Department Stores National Bank's regular review of your account shows a history of on-time payments and low debt. An automatic credit limit increase involves a soft pull, which does not affect your credit score.

The Macy's Credit Card does not offer a rental car insurance benefit. Even though the Macy's Credit Card doesn't have rental car insurance, this perk is one of the handful of credit card benefits that still come with many credit card offers. If you'd like a credit card with rental car insurance, there are plenty of options.

In general, credit card rental car insurance provides coverage against damage and theft of a rental vehicle, usually up to the vehicle's actual cash value, when the rental is paid for entirely with an eligible credit card. To get coverage, the cardholder must decline the rental agency's insurance plan.

The Macy's Credit Card reports to the credit bureaus monthly, within days after the end of a cardholder's monthly billing period. Macy's Credit Card reports the card's credit limit, account balance, payment history, and more to all three of the major credit bureaus: TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian. Department Stores National Bank may use a specific credit bureau more than another, depending on the applicant's home state, and other factors.

Once Macy's Credit Card reports your account information to a credit bureau, it may take a few days before the updates appear on your credit report. New Macy's Credit Card cardholders may not see any new credit account info on their credit report for one or two billing periods after getting a card.

If you'd like to review your up-to-date credit score and TransUnion credit report, you can sign up for a free account on WalletHub. That way, you'll be able to check every day to see if there's any new information about the Macy's Credit Card on your credit report.

Does the Macy's Credit Card have a late fee?

Chip Lupo, Credit Card Writer

@CLoop

Yes, the Macy's Credit Card does have a late fee of up to $40, which applies when cardholders don't make the minimum payment by the due date. The late fee for Macy's Credit Card is $29, and it will increase to $40 for subsequent late payments within 6 months. After 6 months of consecutive payments since your last missed due date, the late fee will reset to $29. Thanks to the CARD Act of 2009, the Department Stores National Bank late fee can never exceed the minimum payment amount.

If you accidentally make less than the required minimum payment or you miss your Macy's Credit Card due date entirely, you can always ask customer service to waive the late fee by calling 1 (888) 257-6757. This is much more likely to work if you have a great payment history with Department Stores National Bank, but even if not, there's no harm in asking.

To avoid getting hit with late fees in the future, make sure to pay at least your minimum required payment each month. The best way to ensure that you never miss a payment is by setting up autopay.

@evelyn_boros

The Macy's Credit Card minimum payment is $29 or 1% of the statement balance, plus fees, past-due amounts, and interest - whichever is higher. If the statement balance is less than $29, the Macy's Credit Card minimum payment will be equal to the balance. In addition, if you recently missed a payment, Department Stores National Bank may add a late fee to your minimum payment.

The minimum payment is the smallest amount you're obligated to pay by the due date for your Macy's Credit Card account to be in good standing. Failure to pay by the due date may result in a late fee. Your credit score will also take a hit if you miss multiple minimum payments.

Is Macy's Credit Card a Visa or Mastercard?

Lisa Cahill, Credit Cards Moderator

@lisacahill

Macy's Credit Card is not a Visa or a Mastercard - it is on the American Express network. This means the Macy's Credit Card has a bit less worldwide acceptance than a Visa or a Mastercard but should still be usable at most merchants within the U.S.

In general, it doesn't matter much what network your credit card is on unless you're focusing specifically on international travel. In that case, you're best served by getting a Visa or Mastercard credit card with no foreign transaction fees. But for all other purposes, all four major credit card networks have comparable benefits and card offers. It's best to compare individual cards on a case-by-case basis rather than focusing on a specific network.

How can I freeze my Macy's Credit Card?

Chip Lupo, Credit Card Writer

@CLoop

You cannot freeze your Macy's Credit Card. If your Macy's Credit Card is lost or stolen, you'll need to call Department Stores National Bank credit card customer service at 1 (888) 257-6757 as soon as possible, so they can cancel the card and send you a new one.

That said, it's important to remember that you won't be held responsible for unauthorized purchases, thanks to a $0 fraud liability guarantee.
